Recently we were invited to assist the CSIR on their facilities, located in Paardefontein, Pretoria North, with the repair of gabion structures used as protection for bomb shelters. The goal was to find out whether the gabions that were damaged during explosions or ballistic testing could be repaired by only focusing on the affected section.
As can be seen in the photos shown, repairs would be possible in small sections where the ballistics damaged individual mesh wires or fragmented individual rocks contained within the gabion compartment.
We therefore suggested the use of mesh panels or gabion basket sections for this purpose – so only the affected baskets and rocks would need to be replaced.
It’s evident that gabions can be successfully used to fortify military installations – it suffers minimal damage under direct hits from mortar and rounds of up to 50mm in diameter!
