How long do Gabions last ?
We have always been asked the question of how long does a gabion basket last, it’s an interesting question and an important one as we don’t want to be making promises that are not based on facts. The life expectancy question is an important one and one that needs more consideration, regarding the position of the final gabion installation, as a structure built on soil in Johannesburg will obviously have a total different lifespan to one built on the beach on the Natal South Coast, due to the salt content and aggressive nature of the sea waves containing beach sand pounding the Galvanization off of the baskets.
Please review the two attached interesting articles covering this important aspect, one from the SAICE December 2018 magazine, and the other from the State of California – Department of Transport, obviously some of the information contained in these two reports is not relevant to the African situation, however, you will find the bulk of the content most interesting and helpful when coming to a decision to make use of either Class A Galvanised mesh, with or without Galfan coating, or with a further PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) coating.
