Why Did Our Male KwaZulu-Natal Branch Team Arrive to Work in Dresses? This Was a Heartwarming Gesture

Gabion Baskets Kwazulu-Natal branch has a heartwarming story to share with you. It all began when their colleague, Sarah De La Fontaine, embarked on a beautiful journey into motherhood and headed off on maternity leave. Her absence was felt deeply, and it sparked a creative and compassionate idea among the team. On 30 November 2023, they did something quite out of the ordinary – they showed up to work wearing dresses! This unique gesture pays tribute to Sarah while making a meaningful impact during the 16 Days of Activism against Women and Child Abuse campaign. It’s a tale that reflects the spirit of Gabion Baskets in KwaZulu-Natal, where dedication to work goes hand in hand with a strong commitment to the community. In this story, you’ll meet Michael Thom and the rest of the team, who believe in making a difference, one extraordinary initiative at a time.

A Dress Code with a Difference

In the heart of KwaZulu Natal, where innovation and creativity in landscaping thrive, Gabion Baskets KZN is more than just a team of skilled professionals. They’re a close-knit family, each member bringing their own unique touch to the artistry of gabion structures. But like any family, they celebrate not only their successes but also their bonds, especially when one of their own embarks on a significant life journey.

Sarah De La Fontaine, a valued sales consultant at Gabion Baskets KwaZulu-Natal, recently embraced the adventure of motherhood and decided to take some well-deserved time off for maternity leave. While her absence was undoubtedly felt within the team, it also ignited a spark of inspiration.

In a surprising and heartwarming gesture, the Gabion Baskets team decided to come to work on 30 November wearing dresses. This wasn’t just a quirky fashion choice; it was a thoughtful tribute to Sarah and her new chapter in life. It’s a testament to the camaraderie and inclusivity that defines the Gabion Baskets family.

16 Days of Activism: A Cause Worth Supporting

But this gesture didn’t stop at celebrating a colleague’s milestone. The timing was intentional, aligning with the 16 Days of Activism against Women and Child Abuse campaign. This global initiative, running from 25 November (International Day for No Violence Against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day), aims to raise awareness about the grave impact of gender-based violence and femicide on women, children, and society as a whole.

This year, as South Africa marked the 25th anniversary of its participation in the campaign, the theme was clear: “Accelerating actions to end gender-based violence and femicide: leaving no one behind.”

A poignant sub-theme highlighted the significance of ensuring safe access to clean water for women, considering it a fundamental human right.

The Robin Hood Foundation: Making a Difference

To further amplify the impact of their gesture, the Gabion Baskets team decided to donate the dresses worn on this special day. These dresses found a new purpose with The Robin Hood Foundation, an organisation dedicated to creating lasting positive change in the lives of disadvantaged communities.

The Robin Hood Foundation’s journey began informally in 2005 when Cindy Norcott noticed how her daughter’s outgrown baby clothes could clothe multiple underprivileged babies. What began as a simple act of kindness soon grew into a mission to support struggling new mothers with clothing and toiletries.

Over the years, the foundation expanded its efforts to assist Gogos (grandmothers) caring for orphaned grandchildren and evolved into a full-fledged non-profit organisation. Their work touches the lives of countless South Africans, particularly widows, grannies, orphans, and babies.

A Call to Action

Gabion Baskets KwaZulu Natal’s dress day wasn’t just a tribute; it was a call to action. It’s a reminder that every small effort can make a big difference, and every act of kindness has a ripple effect.

As the festive season approaches, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the power of community, compassion, and giving. Whether it’s a dress, a smile, or a helping hand, the Gabion Baskets team believes in making a positive impact wherever they can.
