When our client sought an upgrade from their existing boma fireplace, our team stepped in with a gabion-style boma solution that combined durability with aesthetics. The result? A beautifully crafted outdoor centerpiece that enhances both functionality and visual appeal.
Project Overview
The client required a more aesthetically pleasing and long-lasting fireplace. To meet these needs, we designed and installed a gabion-style boma, using high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship.
Materials & Equipment Used
Materials:
✔ 50x50mm welded mesh (3mm thickness) – 4.375m² used
✔ 2.2mm galvanised binding wire – 1.4kg used
✔ Gabion stone – approx. 500-600kg
✔ River sand (for backfilling) – 3 bags
✔ Bracing rods – 8 for internal stabilisation
Tools Required:
🔧 Pliers, bolt cutter, tape measure, spirit level
⛏️ Spade, pick, hand stamper, wheelbarrow
⚒️ 4lb hammer, metal rake, scissors
Installation Process
1️⃣ Fabrication
The boma was pre-fabricated at our workshop in just one day, ensuring a seamless on-site installation.
2️⃣ On-Site Installation
📌 Transport & Site Prep: Materials were offloaded and carried 20-30m to the installation area. The existing fireplace was removed.
📌 Ground Preparation: Underground bricks were repositioned, and the area was backfilled with sand to create a level base.
📌 Basket Placement & Stone Packing: The gabion basket was positioned, and stones were carefully packed inside to form a stable and visually appealing structure.
📌 Final Steps: The boma lid was secured with lacing, and final housekeeping ensured a clean finish.
Challenges & Smart Solutions
🚧 Carting Difficulties: Small steps at the site made it difficult to transport the rock.
✅ Solution: Our team used buckets for manual carrying and built a makeshift ramp to manoeuvre the wheelbarrow down the steps efficiently.
Timeframe & Labour
📅 Fabrication: 1 day (1 labourer)
🛠️ Installation: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM (1 labourer)
