At Gabion Baskets, we are not just about constructing sturdy retaining walls; we strive to make them a feature of your property, enhancing its appeal and value.
Our latest project, commissioned by, Mr Johan Marshall, is a testament to our dedication and expertise in this field.
Mr Marshall, who is building a new house at 37 Cato Rd Kloof, trusted us to construct an L-Shaped wall that would serve not only as a retaining wall but also a distinct feature of his property.
The proposed L-shaped wall spans 21 metres and 16 metres in length, varying in height from 3 metres to 1.5 metres, set against the embankment at a 6-degree batter.
Our team worked diligently to create a design proposal, which was promptly approved by the client and his nominated engineer.
The ground conditions were challenging due to the hard sandstone prevalent in the area. Major excavations required the use of a bobcat, while finer excavation work was done by hand to achieve the final measurements.
The aesthetics of the wall were given due attention as well. Mr Marshall requested that we pack the baskets with standard grey rock at the back and all facing sides with an appealing brown rock.
This approach ensured that the wall was not only functional but also visually pleasing.
We commenced this project on 17 April, and as with any large-scale construction, we encountered a few challenges along the way. The client altered the original design and measurements, there were delays at the quarry for the collection of the brown rock, and weather conditions also played a role.
However, our dedicated team navigated these obstacles efficiently, and work resumed swiftly after the engineer confirmed that the adjusted measurements still aligned with the wall’s dual purpose.
Our choice of materials for this project was guided by our commitment to quality and durability.
We used class-A Galvanised Mattresses (2 x 1 x 0.3) as the foundation and Class-A Galvanised Gabions (4 x 1 x 1, 3 x 1 x 1, 1.5 x 1 x 0.5), along with F34/A4 Geotextile. The wall was filled with Grey and Brown Rock.
Looking forward, we anticipate the completion of this project by the end of May, weather permitting.
We are excited to see the final outcome and are confident that it will be a testament to Gabion Baskets’ ability to blend strength, aesthetics, and expertise in our creations. We thank Mr Marshall for his faith in us, and we look forward to revealing the finished feature wall that will undoubtedly enhance his beautiful new home.
