We are excited to share details about our project in Midrand, where we were tasked with a unique design proposal that combines free-standing brickwork with innovative weld mesh gabion walling for a building extension.
The final design features a robust weld mesh gabion wall, standing 2.7 metres high and extending approximately 40 metres in length, with a width of 300 mm. This ambitious project required around 35 cubic metres of granite rock fill to achieve its structural integrity.
A standout element of this installation is the use of 3 mm thick steel frame box panels, a departure from the traditional weld mesh wire frame boxes. Each rectangular panel measures 900 mm in height, 1.50 m in length, and 300 mm in width.
The design includes four cut-to-fit weld mesh inserts, strategically placed at the bottom, front, rear, and sides of the box panels. These inserts are secured in place by the granite rock fill, while the front and rear inserts are additionally reinforced with bracing rods.
The structure was meticulously assembled, stacking the box panels three high and securing them both vertically and laterally. Within each group of three panels, a central tubular steel pillar support (75 mm x 75 mm x 3 mm) was anchored into the existing concrete floor, enhancing stability.
To further fortify the structure, these pillars were welded to I-beams located along the top of the gabion and brick wall, ensuring lasting durability.
The project was completed within a two-week timeframe, with Gabion Baskets overseeing construction and project management, as well as providing training for our SMME subcontractor.
As highlighted by project lead Cheyne, “Gabions provide endless opportunities to combine architectural and engineered elements to create amazing structures.”
We are committed to exploring these possibilities and enhancing our projects with innovative designs.
South African manufactured Class-A Galvanised or with Grey PVC coated Hexagonal woven mesh or Square Weldmesh baskets and mattresses.
Protect the integrity of your gabion basket installation with high-quality geotextiles between your gabion structures and the soil.
Sandbags are an ideal solution when it comes to soil erosion protection, and diverting floodwaters away from sensitive installations or homes.
These blankets promote vegetation growth when combined with your gabion structure and help retain the important topsoil.
Heavy rocks need heavy transport. Our Barrows were specially designed to transport our quality products.
Hexagonal woven mesh is the perfect product for rockfall mesh netting and to cover large areas of river mattresses quickly.
Fully made up Gabion baskets or mesh rolls/panels are offered for more flexible use on building or civil engineering construction sites.
This cylindrical-shaped sack gabion is filled to 75% capacity with rock and used in restricted areas or to act as foundation for gabion river structures.
Only need a small retaining wall up to 1.5m height? Why not use local rock with our small 300 x 300mm cross-section Gab-Bloc Gabion?
The smaller Garden Gabion can be used at home for terracing and smaller Gabion retaining walls, or even internal feature/ decorative walls, or raised garden beds.
