Project Spotlight: Stabilisation of a Disturbed Slope in Dundee

Project Spotlight: Stabilisation of a Disturbed Slope in Dundee

Nestled in the scenic town of Dundee, a critical project is underway to stabilise an embankment and secure a property against erosion risks. This ambitious endeavour showcases the seamless blend of engineering expertise, teamwork, and dedication to delivering sustainable solutions.

Project Overview
Gabion Basket Pty Ltd was engaged to address significant slope instability issues at a site housing a spacious dwelling. The slope had a history of repetitive failures, mass slides, and rolling boulders, posing safety risks and threatening the property’s structural integrity. The goal of the project is to provide long-term stability through expert engineering and practical geotechnical solutions.

Challenges Identified

  • Repetitive slope failures leading to compromised stability.

  • Large-scale mass slides and dislodged boulders.

  • Unstable slope sections causing slippages and erosion.

  • Safety risks for the property and its occupants.

Solutions and Progress

1. Geotechnical Expertise
Using SANS 1200DK standards, Gabion Basket Pty Ltd designed tailored solutions to address the unique geological challenges of the site. A comprehensive site plan was developed to guide all aspects of the stabilisation process, ensuring safety and precision.

2. Earthworks and Excavation
To date, over 19,000 cubic metres (m³) of material have been excavated, including:

  • 4,000m³ of boulders

  • 5,000m³ of soft material

  • 10,000m³ of hard material

This monumental effort has been executed without accidents or damage to the existing dwelling. Key equipment utilised includes:

  • TC30 Bell Excavator

  • Bell 850 Bulldozer

  • Bell Front-End Loader L2606d

  • CAT TLB

  • Bomag BW212D-3 Padfoot Roller

3. Gabion Structures and Stormwater Infrastructure

  • Approximately 400 tonnes of gabion rock have been delivered, with 70% already packed. Over 100 units of 2m x 1m x 1m galvanised gabion baskets have been installed to retain soil, prevent erosion, and enhance stability.

  • Phase 1 of the stormwater infrastructure project has been completed, with drainage systems designed to channel water away from the slope, reducing erosion risks.

4. Top Embankment Work

  • The V-drain, manhole, and soak pit installations on the top embankment are progressing smoothly.

  • The 1m bench cut wall has been extended by a 1m x 1m x 1m gabion to mitigate future scouring.

  • The first layer of the 2.5m gabion wall at the base has been completed, and the second layer is well underway with 30 cubes packed and 62 cubes remaining.

Innovative Measures

  • Vegetation Support: Plans to install woodchip blankets will support vegetation growth on newly excavated areas, promoting long-term stabilisation.

  • Future Extensions: Additional proposals include the placement of 6m x 2m x 0.3m gabion mattresses in front of the bench cut, along with drain and kerb installations to further reinforce the slope.

Acknowledgments and Team Effort
The team’s commitment to overcoming weather delays, equipment challenges, and site complexities has been remarkable. Toolbox meetings ensure safety and efficiency, while collaboration with stakeholders—including Riaz’s support in securing machinery—has been invaluable.

Conclusion
The stabilisation project in Dundee exemplifies excellence in geotechnical engineering and teamwork. By addressing complex slope stability issues, Gabion Basket Pty Ltd has ensured the safety and longevity of the site while protecting the property’s value. With substantial progress made and innovative solutions in place, this project stands as a benchmark for sustainable engineering practices.

Stay tuned for further updates and insights as the project approaches completion.
