We are excited to share the details of a significant project we undertook in Secunda, Mpumalanga, in collaboration with Johan Rosslee. In early March 2021, Johan approached Gabion Baskets seeking expert guidance on constructing a river retaining wall.

Understanding the project’s requirements, Clinton Cheyne promptly provided several initial options for river retaining walls. To ensure a tailored solution, Clinton conducted a comprehensive site visit later that month. During the assessment, he estimated an average length of approximately 300 meters, taking height measurements at 20-meter intervals, which indicated a stepped increase of 0.5 meters.

Given the presence of bedrock at the river base, we recommended a river wall on rock solution. Our proposal included a concrete base beneath the gabions, starting with a 1-meter high retaining wall and increasing to 3 meters in stepped intervals of 0.5 meters every 20 meters. This design not only ensures structural integrity but also aligns with best practices for riverbank stabilization.

To enhance durability and longevity, we advised the use of PVC-coated gabions, particularly important in environments where water quality may vary, as evidenced by the slightly murky conditions observed during our site visit.

In addition to supplying a detailed quotation for the gabions, we offered a week of training to assist Johan and his team with lacing, bracing, and packing the gabions. This hands-on support is crucial for ensuring the successful implementation of the project.

We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this project on the Secunda area and appreciate the opportunity to contribute to its development.
