The Challenge: Managing Erosion at the Foot of a Gabion Wall
The Umdloti installation features a gabion wall designed to stabilise a steep bank and prevent soil erosion. However, recent heavy rains have caused a water cascade effect, funneling water to the base of the wall. This unexpected flow has led to concentrated erosion at the foot of the structure, a situation that requires immediate attention to maintain the integrity of the wall.
Michael’s Proposed Solution: Installing a Gabion Mattress
In his video, Michael outlined an effective plan to address the issue. He suggested installing a gabion mattress over the affected area. These mattresses, made of durable wire mesh and filled with stones, are ideal for spreading and dissipating water flow. They offer robust protection against further erosion, ensuring that the structural integrity of the gabion wall remains intact while maintaining its natural aesthetic.
