In an impressive display of engineering and environmental stewardship, Gabion Baskets has successfully completed a three-phase project at Silverstar Casino, marking a significant achievement in the company’s portfolio. Spearheaded by Project Manager Leon Pieterse, the project stands as a testament to the team’s commitment, skill, and dedication to delivering quality under demanding timelines.
The journey began in October 2023, with the team tasked with constructing a nine-metre tall wall extending 40 metres in length. This initial phase laid the foundation for what was to become a comprehensive effort to bolster the casino’s infrastructure against environmental challenges. Completed in December 2023, Phase One set a high standard for the work that was to follow.
January 8th marked the beginning of Phase Two, focusing on erecting a six-metre tall wall spanning 32 metres. This phase was aimed at further strengthening the area’s defences against natural elements, ensuring the long-term stability and safety of the casino’s surroundings. By the end of February, the team celebrated the completion of this critical phase, once again, ahead of schedule.
The final stretch of the project commenced at the start of March, with an ambitious goal to fortify the embankment adjacent to the casino. The team strategically placed 250 cubic metres of fill to raise the berm by one metre, significantly enhancing the area’s resilience against water flow and potential erosion. A 16-metre gabion basket, positioned near the stormwater outlet, served as a robust barrier to protect the embankment from water spillage and movement. This phase wrapped up by mid-March, marking the successful completion of the entire project.
The Silverstar Casino project, spanning three distinct but interconnected phases, underscores Gabion Baskets’ unwavering commitment to excellence. Each stage of the project was meticulously planned and executed, with the team overcoming various challenges to meet their objectives efficiently.
Beyond the technical achievements, the project reflects Gabion Baskets’ dedication to environmental stewardship. By employing gabion baskets, the team not only provided structural solutions but also ensured that these interventions harmonised with the surrounding environment, promoting sustainability and natural beauty.
As we celebrate the completion of the Silverstar Casino project, we also look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. This project has not only reinforced our position as a leader in the gabion basket industry but also set new benchmarks for what can be achieved with hard work, innovation, and a deep respect for the environment.
Stay tuned for more updates on our projects and endeavours. Gabion Baskets continues to push the boundaries of engineering and environmental solutions, one project at a time.
February Update — As February begins, we bring you an exciting update from the heart of our ongoing project at Silverstar Casino.
In the video above, Project manager Leon Pieterse provides a comprehensive walkthrough of the Phase Two progress.
After the triumphant completion of Phase One in December, which spanned an impressive 40 metres in length and reached 9 metres in height, our team has seamlessly transitioned into Phase Two. This new phase promises to be just as remarkable, encompassing a 32-metre stretch and reaching a height of 6 metres.
To date, the team has impressively packed about 88 cubic metres. The current focus is on preparing the last 13 metres for the base basket installation. Leon’s walkthrough highlighted the team’s efficiency and dedication, with an average of 15 cubic metres being packed daily by a team of 10 skilled professionals.
One of the significant challenges faced was dealing with the wet soil conditions, which initially led to some instability. However, Leon reassured us that the situation is now completely stable, demonstrating our team’s ability to quickly adapt and resolve unforeseen challenges.
The team is confidently on track to wrap up Phase Two by the end of February.
We eagerly anticipate the completion of Phase Two and the continued transformation of Silverstar Casino’s landscape. Stay tuned for more updates as we progress towards our goal, and don’t forget to check out Leon’s full video walkthrough for a closer look at our work on site.
As always, we remain committed to delivering excellence in every aspect of our projects. Thank you for following our journey!
12 January 2024 Update — As 2024 unfolds, Gabion Baskets, a leader in gabion basket supply and installation in South Africa, proudly announces the commencement of Phase Two at Silverstar Casino. Building on the success of our 2023 project, this new phase is a testament to our commitment to excellence and innovation in construction.
Our latest journey began on 8 January 2024, with the Gabion Baskets team swiftly moving to dismantle the existing concrete block retaining wall. Within just a few days, about 20% to 30% of the wall was successfully excavated, marking a significant milestone in the early stages of construction.
Phase Two aims to enhance and expand upon the foundations laid last year. This project involves constructing a gabion retaining wall with precise engineering and aesthetic design, ensuring both stability and visual appeal.
The construction process for Phase Two includes meticulous planning and execution. Our team is creating a robust foundation three metres deep, with a mass gravity wall standing six metres high. This approach guarantees the long-term durability and effectiveness of the structure.
Early challenges, such as managing excavation and material displacement, were met with innovative solutions. The creation of a ramp for backfilling and the strategic placement of fill material demonstrate Gabion Baskets‘ expertise in overcoming construction hurdles.
Environmental sustainability remains a key focus in Phase Two. The use of gabions supports eco-friendly practices, promoting natural drainage and reducing soil erosion, making it a responsible choice for construction.
To fully appreciate the scope of Phase Two, it’s important to reflect on the achievements of Phase One in 2023. The project set a high standard for quality and innovation, overcoming numerous challenges to create a functional and visually striking gabion retaining wall.
As Phase Two progresses, Gabion Baskets is not just building a wall; we are crafting a legacy of excellence in the gabion construction industry. This project symbolises our dedication to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with gabion structures.
